Honestly, I love that Rory got to make mistakes through the seasons. She was just so shy and didn’t take opportunities to do things outside her comfort zone, like in the episode in season 1 where she didn’t want to go to the dance, just because, with no reason. I liked her arc of messing up and being young and stupid, which Logan really helped with. I just wished the writers knew when enough is enough and how to turn it into a lesson for her. It’s good to do things outside the spectrum of who you are and go look for different existences in life, but you have to know how to go back to your good ways and not lose yourself in the rabbit hole. That’s what happened to Rory; she lost control and crashed. She could’ve been an example to people in navigating their youth, but she became what many people desperately wish to not be.

rewatching gilmore girls and what'd you mean they ruined rory in later seasons??? she's always been that girl. in the first ever episode she wants to turn down private school cause she spoke to a cute boy once and mocks classmates for painting their nails. throughout season 1 she mocks other girls repeatedly. in season 2 she makes fun of/gets upset at lane for becoming a cheerleader. she gets in a fight with dean (where she was right), but makes up with him and apologises for thinking a woman shouldn't have to cook and clean for their husband. like i do love rory sm, but she was never a girls girl & she was always spoiled and oblivious of that & prioritises boys over everything else.

why do people love marty so much?

he sucked?? not only as a love interest of rory's but also as a friend?

he gets mad at her for not realizing that logan likes her. which? what the fuck? and rory needs to chase him down and apologize to him like she's done anything wrong?

then the whole incident with lucy? he puts her in an objectively shitty situation because rory's known marty since freshmen year but she's staring to become friends with lucy. rory attempts to reach out to him once again and he constantly shrugs her off.

it makes complete sense that she'd be shocked and just go along with it because what the hell else is she gonna do? confront him right there? keep in mind, she hasn't seen him for an entire year so there's the shock of just 'marty is still alive.'

THEN when she finally gets a hold of him, he tells her that she's more beautiful: what the fuck, dude? he has a girlfriend and this is what he's doing?

he was okay when he was introduced but having him develop a crush on rory, which he needed reciprocated and would ice her out when he found out it wasnt, was his downfall

Rory Gilmore - Brilliant yet Broken (burnt-out-gifted-kid-syndrome at its finest)

It's kinda bugged me that Rory's Downfall™️ is a point of division within the fandom. On the one hand, while I agree the whole "steal a yacht, get arrested and drop out of Yale" thingy was rather an extreme reaction, I also understand why Rory went to that extreme upon getting criticism of her journalism skills.

This was one of those very rare occurrences in Rory Gilmore's life where someone superior to her, someone she hopes to impress, has dropped a bombshell of an opinion on top of her. It's one of the moments where she hit a wall, and up until this point, it's the biggest wall yet. It doesn't matter whether or not Rory actually "doesn't got it", that's up to personal taste as all artistic works are (Yes, writing is an art form - as a Creative Writing Major I will not accept any arguments against this).

Everyone told Rory that "this isn't her", "this isn't the Rory I know", "Whyy did you drop out of YYAALE?!" (thanks Jess).

And I see where they're coming from, I do. This is Rory Gilmore, sweet, pleasant, feisty, hardworking, determined, intellectual, insightful and goal-oriented, Rory Gilmore. It has been her (and Lorelai's) dream to go to a good university, whether it was Harvard or Yale. And she had made it. This young girl, who faced her fair share the problems at Chilton High School. Yet she faced them head on, struggling both socially and academically to meet the unfamiliar and extreme standards of the prestigious school.

I mean, Rory's iconic line is literally "Who cares if I'm pretty if I fail my finals?". It is made very clear throughout series how important her academics and her grades are to her. Her first day of high school, the principal points out her exceptional grades yet her lack of extracurriculars.

She is the classic trope of "gifted child who defined herself by her grades and spiraled out of control due to lack of academic validation that she completely burnt out and broke down".

She finally reached her goal. She finally achieved her dream. She was living it. And it all blew up in her face. Because, truth be told, she never actually achieved the dream. Not yet, anyway.

Placing the upmost importance on her perceived success that she completely ignored the fire and drive within herself. Her willpower that had been so strong throughout her years of schooling, it was slowly chipped away, bit by bit, before the smallest piece remained by the time she stepped foot into Yale. But she still wanted to impress, wanted to please, wanted to be recognised so bad (need for academic validation) that the words of her boyfriend's stupid dad hit her so hard, they shattered the smallest remaining fragment of fire with her, completely putting it out.

I'm not a complete Rory apologist, there are so many traits and choices she's made that annoy me immensely. Sometimes the way she acts pisses me off, but I respect that about her characterisation. She is realistic, she is raw and genuine and I empathise with that.

Every facet of her brilliance is just as real as her brokenness. Both sides of Rory make her Rory.

they both went through rough patches that caused them to hurt people and not be the best versions of themselves but they still were the same people all their lives, there’s no ”chilton rory” and ”yale rory” here. and THE WHOLE APPEAL of rory and jess is that they don’t judge eachother and don’t see eachother the way the rest of the world does. now speaking off…

my girl lorelai isn’t self relective enough for this, she hates jess bc he’s a threat to the perfect life she wants for her perfect daughter (a life she didn’t get). she thinks rory is just like her and will go wild if she doesn’t shield her from it. she doesn’t get that rory will have her own experiences that she’s not familiar with and won’t understand. but she will. not everything in rory’s life will have something to do with lorelai’s. which leads me to…

rory and lorelai’s love lives don’t mirror eachother, asp, because they are very different people who want very different things in partners and in life. someone being the best guy for lorelai doesn’t equal a younger version of that guy would be the perfect guy for rory. forced parallels are forced. because of her cold and wealthy childhood, lorelai wants a simple, humble life with a stable and loving guy. rory is drawn to intellectualism and travel, the unknown. different to what both lorelai wants and what the grandparents want (marriage between two freshly ivy league graduated people). i think you know what i’m sayinggg

if logan didn’t understand that this wasn’t something rory wanted, they didn’t have a stable enough foundation to build a life on anyways. yes, she loved him but she didn’t want to get married at 22. i don’t know why people wanted this for rory when it’s just as bad of an idea as dean or lane getting married young.

i feel like people think that i don’t like lorelai because i’m on jess’ side when they fight but he’s just the exception. i think lorelai can be emotionally intelligent and i’m on her side with her parents, luke, her other bfs, sookie & michel etc. generally i enjoy her more than rory. but unlike a lot of the people who like lorelai, i don’t think she’s always right when she’s fighting with rory. it’s pretty 50/50. i don’t really have an opinion there. i don’t see them as being against each other. and during The Big Fight, i think everyone involved acted horribly. except for jess❤️ ok that’s it.

1. I really hate Emily and Richard. The way they’re so disrespectful to Lorelai pisses me off, yet somehow SHE’S the bad guy??? They’re both rude, judgmental, unempathetic. And the way Emily blames Lorelai for every goddamn thing. Also don’t even get me started on Richard. It’s like Steven Hyde all over again where he gets a free pass from the fandom to be a jackass.

2. I don’t think Dean is abusive to Rory, but definitely to Lindsey. Or at least is a douchebag to her. The way he legit YELLED at her after she made this lovely home cooked meal for her. AND AFTER HE HAD SEX WITH HIS EX GIRLFRIEND??? FUCK ALL THE WAY OFF

3. Logan is not to blame for Rory’s actions in the later seasons and Jess is not some “cure”. Rory is a grown woman capable of making her own goddamn decisions. Not to mention she kissed Jess while dating Dean, fucked a MARRIED Dean?? And this was all before Logan came into the picture. She was the one who dropped out of Yale. She was the one who wanted to steal a boat. It’s all on her.

4. Rory is not a bad friend to Paris. They’ve both made mistakes. Plus Paris canonically admits to treating Rory like shit.

5. I can’t stand Javajunkie. I was into it in the beginning but Luke’s reaction to Lorelai being engaged really stuck out to me. Especially compared to how supportive Chris was of it. (Not a Chris/Lorelai apologist but this is an observation.)
